This is unbelievably HARD for me to post, but it’s like peeling off a band-aid before summer, and swimsuit season. I know everyone has their ‘thing’, and this is mine.
This is the thing that makes me cringe, and avoid the mirror. I’ve been working really hard to get past feeling insecure and self-conscious, and this is part of that process for me!

3 years ago I wouldn’t have DREAMED of wearing a bikini to the pool or the beach…NO WAY! Not with this “thing” on my belly. (Kids refer to it as a “butt” and giggle. I pretend it doesn’t bother me, but it does.)
I’ve spent the last 2 1/2 years working on ME. Getting fit, and making my health a priority has not only changed my body physically, but for the first time I’ve started feeling more comfortable in my own skin! My confidence and self esteem have improved drastically! So, even though it’s NOT easy…I WILL wear my bikini this summer – not to ‘flaunt’ anything, but to practice being OK with my whole self!
This scar is my badge of honor, for bringing 4 wonderful people into this world. It’s just part of who I am now. I continue working hard EVERY day to be OK with the body I have: every wrinkle, stretch mark, scar and freckle.
For me, that means controlling what I CAN: working out every day, and fueling my body with the kinds of foods that make me feel better, stronger and have enough energy to do everything I need to do, every day, with a smile on my face!
Will I ever have a 6-pack? Nope. But that’s not my goal. I’m just trying be as healthy as I can, so that I can wear that bikini with my head held high!

I’m half Irish, but man O’man my ancestors ate a lot of starches and fatty meats! And of course, they washed it down with lots O’beer! So, when you’re trying to keep it light on St. Patty’s Day…it can be a little tricky.
Tomorrow, we’re going with a healthier version of Shepherd’s Pie! I’ve made this recipe several times, and we all LOVED it! *Inspired by a recipe from Skinny Taste.
Turkey & Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie
Ingredients:
For the potatoes:
3-4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled, diced
3 cloves garlic
1/2 cup low-fat milk
1/4 cup low-sodium chicken broth
2 tbsp Greek yogurt or sour cream
salt and pepper to taste
For the filling:
apx. 1 lb 93% lean ground turkey
1 tsp olive oil
1 medium onion, diced
1 celery stalk, chopped
1 parsnip, peeled and diced
2 cloves garlic, diced
10 oz frozen mixed vegetables
2 tbsp flour (leave out to make gluten-free)
1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
2 tsp tomato paste
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp freshly chopped rosemary (or a little less dry if you don’t have fresh)
salt and pepper
paprika
Directions:
Boil sweet potatoes and garlic in a pot of salted water until cooked and soft. Drain and mash with chicken broth, Greek yogurt or sour cream, salt and pepper.
Preheat oven to 400°F. Spray a 9×13″ pan with non-stick cooking spray.
Spoon mixture into prepared baking pan, and top with mashed sweet potatoes. Sprinkle with paprika and bake for 20-30 minutes or until heated through and potatoes turn golden.

I don’t think I’ve ever tried posting a Vlog! But I’m going for it today!
If you’re having trouble convincing your kids to get on-board with healthier eating…I get it! Been there. Done that! My kids did not react well when I told them I would no longer be buying hot dogs or chicken nuggets at the store. That’s not to say that they will never eat them again. I am all for special occasion allowances. However, I just don’t add these items to my grocery list anymore!
I’ve found ways to substitute healthier alternatives, for the foods that they love. And of course, it’s a work in progress! We are always looking for new foods to try! The wonderful thing is that the kids are so much more aware of the foods that they eat. They read labels just like I do! And that makes my heart go pitter-pat!

So…I’m about one and a half weeks away from finishing up Body Beast! I will definitely be repeating this program. I have REALLY loved it! My only regret is that I didn’t chart my progress very well throughout the last 3 months. Boo for me! I’m always STRESSING this in my challenge groups, and then I don’t follow my own recommendations! Really dumb move on my part! BUT…I know I’ve made progress! I flexed in front of the mirror the other day and surprised myself! Where did those arms come from?
Over the summer, when I was training for the Chicago Marathon, strength training sort of took a back seat. Being a busy mom of 4 AND training for a marathon takes a LOT of time! But I really missed lifting weights and could ‘weight’ to get back to it! (See what I did there? As you can see…my arms aren’t looking particularly ‘ripped’ in my marathon picture! 🙂 And that’s one of the great things about weight-training, you can really see results FAST! And in a couple of weeks…I’ll be starting my NEXT program…21 Day Fix EXTREME! (More about that later!)
So, now that I am in the ‘off season’, I’ve had time to do Body Beast AND work in some runs each week, too! I truly love to do BOTH!
Back in December, I did a fun little challenge to see if I could run 50 miles during the month. It was such a silly little thing, but it turned out to be VERY motivating! It was fun to tick off the miles as I went! And doing it in such a busy month, while living in Michigan in the winter…well…I was feeling pretty good about it!
So I’m doing it again!!!
