I have done so many different types of workouts: cardio, dance cardio, running, kickboxing, yoga, etc…but nothing has ever given me the kind of results that lifting weights has! When I added strength training…I FINALLY saw the kinds of changes in my body that I had always wanted!
So I stick with what works, while including some of my other favorite workouts too, of course! I just make sure to lift weights at least 3 times each week. The heavier I lift, the better results I get! I used to be afraid I’d get ‘bulky’, but I was uninformed. The truth is, lifting weights made me leaner and stronger than I had ever been!
If you’re still not convinced that you need to lift weights, here are 10 reasons you should reconsider.
1. Burn more fat. It has been scientifically proven that lifting weights keeps your metabolism elevated for several hours after exercise.
2. Change your body shape. You will NOT get bulky! Women lack the body composition and hormones for that! Keep your nutrition clean, and you get leaner and toner and skinny jeans readier!
3. Boost your metabolism. As we get older, we begin to lose muscle tissue, bummer right! If you diet alone, you will lose muscle even faster! Lifting weights will help you build muscle tissue, thus elevating your metabolism, thus burning more calories all day long!
4. Get stronger and more confident. Strength training will make you better at every day activities too, like lifting kids, bags and bags of groceries, etc…And being stronger will make you feel confident and bad ass! (true story!)
5. Build strong bones. Women MUST lift weights to avoid bone loss! When you lift weights you improve your muscle strength and bone density at the same time! Say NO to hunched over brittle bones!
6. Fight depression. Endorphins are endorphins! Yoga, running, weights…it all makes you feel pretty damn good!

When I was first starting out, I didn’t have a clue what to lift, how many times, which days per week, etc…I would aimlessly wander around the gym just looking for things to pick up and put down. Not very effective. When I started P90X it was a relief to have a program that someone else had designed with a purpose in mind. It really takes all of the guesswork out of it for me! It was this time about 3 years ago that I took a look at myself in the mirror and decided I was finally done being unhappy! I had been stuck in a rut for FAR too long. Looking at pictures of myself from summer vacations really opened my eyes to what was happening. It was slow, but I was steadily gaining weight and finding it harder and harder to fit into my clothes.
There were a lot of things I didn’t want to admit to myself. I wasn’t REALLY giving it my all with workouts anymore. I was just kinda going through the motions. I wasn’t REALLY eating all that healthy. There was a lot of processed garbage finding its way into my grocery cart. Convenience trumped health. I was complacent, uncommitted and UN-motivated!
I think you go through phases when this starts to happen.
1. DENIAL: It’s my clothes. They shrunk. My scale must be off! (Don’t tell me you haven’t tried to convince yourself with these same lies!)
2. AVOIDANCE: Scale? What scale? I like baggy, stretchy clothes anyway.
3. DEPRESSION: Why is this happening?! I workout! I eat ‘pretty’ healthy food. It’s not fair! Get away from me with that camera! WAHHH!!! I’m going to assume the fetal position in a dark room. Leave me alone!
4. DEFEAT: Well, what the hell. I’m getting older. This is just what happens. There isn’t ANYTHING I can do about it. I’m not going to live the rest of my life worrying about it. I want to ENJOY life and eat whatever the hell I want. Working out is stupid. I don’t care anymore.
5. REALIZATION: I feel like shit. I don’t fit into any of my clothes. I’m tired all of the time. I’m not enjoying life at all right now! I’m sick of feeling like this. I gotta do something!
What stage are you in? If you’re in 1-4, let me save you the trouble and spoil the ending. You’ll eventually get to #5, because no matter how hard we try to convince ourselves that we can’t, or don’t want to feel look and feel healthy, we do. You’re not kidding anyone (or yourself) when you say otherwise.
There’s a happy ending though! 🙂 I had to dig deeper than ever, and really connect with WHY I wanted/needed to make some changes, and really give it my absolute, 100% ALL!

I invested in myself and added strength training to my life! Not just half-ass, cute little pink dumbbells, but a program that taught me chicks CAN and SHOULD lift HEAVY weights! Nothing has changed my body more than that did!
I committed to eating 100% CLEAN for 21 days straight! NO processed food, no alcohol, no soda, no eating out, etc. Just whole foods, prepared at home, where I could control every bite. And one Shakeology (all natural, dense nutrition, super food meal replacement that I FIRMLY believe boosted my results!) Now this might seem extreme, but I was so focused on what I wanted, I just laid it all out there to my husband and my family. They were supportive, and only made fun of me a little! 😉

In 25 days, I lost 8 pounds and 9.5 inches! That was the fuel I needed to fuel my fire and keep going!

But forget the pounds and the pictures…what you can’t see here is the transformation that took place in how I felt! I couldn’t believe what I was doing! I wasn’t quite done yet! I went on to lose 8 more pounds and about 6 more inches.

First of all…you don’t have to ‘kebab’ this chicken if you don’t want to. You can just marinate it and grill it up…cause it’s really about the marinade! You could slather it on a shoe and it would still be pretty tasty!
But for the purposes of this recipe, let’s assume you’ll be grilling chicken (not shoes).
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
3 tablespoons Dijon mustard
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 lime, juiced
1/2 lemon, juiced
1 teaspoon kosher salt
ground black pepper to taste
This marinade is enough for about 5-6 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves.
Whisk all of the ingredients together.
Cut up chicken (if making kebabs) into 1 inch chunks.
Put the chicken in a large Ziploc bag and add marinade.
Put the chicken in the fridge and try to marinate for at least 2 hours (less if you’re in a hurry and didn’t plan ahead).
Place 5-6 pieces of chicken on each kebab stick (I pre-soaked mine so they wouldn’t burn).
*Optional – feel free to add some veggies to your kebabs (mushrooms, peppers, onion, tomato…)
Grill chicken over med/high heat and cook until juices run clear. (kebabs will take about 5-7 minutes on each side.
Then, when they were done grilling, I took the pieces off the stick, and shoved them into my 21 Day Fix container to see how many would fit! I was able to fit almost 2 full sticks in one red container – which was a lot of food!

I’ve been thinking about trying out one of the bazillion recipes out there for copycat Quest bars, and in the end…wouldn’t you know it…I kinda did my own thang!
But the results were pretty darn tasty if I do say so myself!
I actually made 2 batches: one chocolate chip cookie dough, and one chocolate brownie batter!
And I’ll show you how I did it, so that you can try it, and/or change it to your tastes, TOO!
Here’s what you’ll need:
4 scoops of your favorite vanilla protein powder (about 1/3 cup a scoop) – I used Beachbody whey. (I’m thinking you could use Shakeology for these too! For some extra nutrients!)
¼ cup natural nut or seed butter of choice (smooth, not crunchy) – I used peanut for this batch.
1/3 (I used Stevia, less if you like – feel free to sub honey, agave, etc…adjust water accordingly)
2-5 tbsp. water (add 1 T. at a time, add more or less as needed)
¼ cup oat flour
optional extras: I added 1/3 cup mini chocolate chips for my chocolate chip cookie dough batch, and 2 T. cocoa powder for my brownie batter batch. Experiment adding other fun ingredients like cinnamon, vanilla, dried fruit, etc…
In a large bowl, combine the protein powder, oat flour, nut butter and sweetener together. Add water 1 Tablespoon at a time – If using Stevia (dry sweetener) you’ll need more water than if using honey or agave.
Stir together – get your hand in there to smoosh it all together until you can form a ball with no little bits coming out.
Scoop out the dough onto a piece of wax paper and shape into a rectangle.
Cut into 5 bars and refrigerate for 30-40 minutes until firm.
Refrigerate & ENJOY!!!

I have a story to tell, and I just need to get it out!
Once upon a time, about 2 and a half years ago, there was this mom who was desperate for a change.
SPOILER ALERT! (It was ME!)
I was slowly gaining weight and losing every last shred of self-confidence I had – which wasn’t much to begin with. I was seriously considering just giving up and resigning myself to what I thought was inevitable: stretchy waistbands and spending the rest of my life on the couch trying to convince myself that it didn’t matter. Who cares!?
I decided to do something about it – one last BIG effort to see what could happen if I really gave it my all! I knew about Beachbody and Shakeology through my good friend Jenelle Summers (who had also introduced this whole coaching business to me – which I did not understand at the time). I wanted to try Shakeology and some new fitness programs, but I was reluctant to spend that kind of money and I was VERY skeptical of Shakeology, but intrigued enough to try it and see – expecting to chalk it up as a big, dumb mistake!
Then, I did something really CRAZY! Despite warnings from my friends and family that it was a big scam and a pyramid scheme (SCARY!), I signed up as a coach simply so I could save 25% on my big dumb mistake!
What happened next blew my mind! In my first 3-6 months, I lost 24 pounds, about 20 inches and felt better than I had ever felt in my life!
And something else. I was running these support groups for my friends and family members to keep myself on track, and they were losing weight and getting fit and healthy, too! I was HOOKED! I had found my passion! And I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up! A Beachbody Coach! *Oh, and nothing bad happened. It wasn’t a scam or a big scary scheme after all!
I have hosted at least one support group every month since I started and the transformations I’ve witnessed are UN-f’n-believable!! It’s the most amazing feeling to be part of that! I have a basic need to help people, and coaching fulfills that need for me! This is why I get up in the morning, excited to get to work!
I wholeheartedly believe in these products and programs because I’ve seen first hand how they’ve changed people’s lives – including mine!
I’m just a regular ol’ mom of four amazing kids, wife of my high school sweetheart, and former first grade teacher who took a giant leap of faith and boy did it pay off – BIG time! I work part time hours, at home, with my kids, when I want, where I want and how I want. Just 2 years after starting, I now make as much moo-la as I did working full time as a teacher, spending my days with other people’s kids. I am proof that anyone can do this!

Don’t you hate it when you pull out your favorite summer workout clothes and you pass out from the smell?! Don’t pitch them just yet…try this first!
Step 1: Fill a sink with warm water and add about 1/2 – 1 C. of baking soda. Swish the water around until the soda is dissolved and add your stinky duds. Push everything down into the water to make sure it’s all covered and wet. Let sit for 30 minutes – 2 hours.
Step 2: Rinse thoroughly;squeezing out the clothes as you rinse. Now fill up the sink with HOT water and add about 1 cup of white vinegar. Swoosh the clothes around until saturated. Let the clothes soak for another 30 minutes – 2 hours (longer is fine too).
Step 3: Rinse thoroughly again and run your dripping duds to the washer. Don’t overfill and don’t use too much laundry detergent (half the usual amount is good). Wash in hot water. Remove once finished and if you can, dry out in the sun for natural odor killing magic…if not, air dry or tumble in the dryer.
TIP: If your clothes still smell, you can buy a special detergent. These “sports washes” can be found in sporting goods section of stores like Walmart and Target, and on Amazon.com. They can be expensive! But it’s what the professionals use – and a good last resort for your odor-eliminating needs!
Follow the directions for the product you buy. (obviously!)
To AVOID the stink in the first place, never just throw your sweaty clothes into the hamper. Immediately following your workout, rinse or soak until you’re ready to wash. Or at LEAST just let them air dry! These fabrics wick the sweat and moisture from our bodies while we workout, but left inside the fabric – it’s a breeding ground for bacteria! P.U.!

I love a good training plan, but sometimes I need to make my own in order to accomplish the goals I am trying to reach! This time around…I’ve set my sights on a half marathon. BUT…the one thing that’s missing from most training plans is STRENGTH training!
I LOVE to lift, because I love how I feel, and how my body looks with lean muscle mass. Too much running, and not enough lifting, and my legs turn into little toothpicks. I also love that lifting weights turns my body into a calorie-torching machine! Ya, I burn some calories when I run. But if that’s ALL I do, my body adapts and actually starts holding on to extra calories to fuel those long runs. When I lift, I get the benefit of the ‘after-burn’! I keep burning calories even after my workout is done! BOOM!
So…with my half marathon about 2 months away, I’ve been working with a schedule that allows me to do both! I always start with the basic Hal Higdon plan, and then modify in order to fit in the strength training that I want to do each week!
